I have some cool friends. They are devoted husbands, fathers and decent human beings. Our lives gets messy time to time for we are not all perfect, but for the most part, good people…which makes them cool. For instance, I have a friend who used to be a rockn DJ…he was “da man” promoting kick’n parties in his college days and providing the definition of the word “hip”. I even have several friends who wrote a book….I believe they even sold some too. I have friends who are successful businessman, and I even have friends who are Doctors. See, I told you I have some cool friends.
We all have one thing in common, we are about the same age, you know the age when the fonts on your phone is set to the largest setting and you can only read one word per screen. But we leave the setting as is, cause at least we can read it. Yeah, that age. I’ve noticed that in the last few years, our conversations has been shifted, it shifted from less of what great ideas we have in how to accumulate more, less conversations about how busy we are, how jacked up the politics of our comapny is…and our conversation is now more of, what can we do to make a difference, What can we do to make a lasting mark? What can we do to help this world that’s in crisis? My friend summed it up the best when he said, “I spent all of my energy, time, effort and strength to better MY life in the first half of life and look where it’s gotten me? Unsatisfied, tired and empty. Let’s make the second half NOT about us anymore, let’s really try to make a difference in the world. Let’s be significant!”.
This conversation lead to a trip to the slums of Tijuana to help build homes for the homeless. We took our sons to help them experience at their young age the joys of sweat shed for someone else in need. This trip led to a boys foster home in Tijuana where we got to meet the director and his wife and a group of 20 loving kids who do not have loving pasts. This led to a decision to committing to help, walk and live life with our new friends…not just one trip a year, but one trip a month for the following 3 years and beyond to foster a healthy and a genuine relationship where we can truly now call each other family.
Success to Significance….not that we feel more significant because we go to Tijuana, but there’s a group of kids in Tijuana who thinks we are pretty cool. Slowy, we are catching on to what brings true satisfaction of life, and it had nothing to do going after what we thought would make us “happy”, it was simply finding something that made someone else happy.
